The Alternate Route Master of Education is a teacher certification pathway designed for individuals who have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree and have secured a teaching contract with a school district under a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) license. This 2-year on-the-job and online program includes 30 graduate credits that are designed to support novice teachers in their initial placements. Completion of this program leads to New Jersey teaching certification in a specific content area that aligns with the CE license and a Masters of Education in Instructional Practice.

I. Required Courses (6 courses)

  • course - Advocacy for Students and Families

  • course - Advocacy in Curriculum Design

  • course - Anti-Biased/Anti-Racist Professional Practice

  • course - Clinical Seminar

II. Content Area (4 courses)

A. Elementary Education (MEEE)

  • course - Literacy for All Students in P-6

  • course - Methods of Teaching and Assessment for Elementary Mathematics and Science

  • course - Inquiry and Literacy in Elementary Language Arts and Social Studies

  • course - Math Content Pedagogy

B. Secondary Education (MESC)

  • course - Literacy and Learning Across Contents

  • course - Methods of Teaching and Assessment in Secondary Content Areas OR course - Methods of Teaching and Assessment in Language Classrooms (world language certifications)

  • 2 Education Electives (any two additional classes in EDUC)
